From 2016 to 2024, Michele Rankin, a dedicated Palms Australia volunteer made a profound impact on her Timor-Leste partner organisation, the Balibo Community Learning Centre and its surrounding community. Her focus on skills transfer and capacity building left an enduring legacy, mentoring seven staff members and equipping them with diverse expertise. From project coordination and financial management to specialised roles like guiding and dental clinic administration, she empowered individuals to lead with confidence.
Her commitment to community engagement and cultural exchange was equally transformative. A trusted member of the community, she participated in major cultural events, fostering mutual understanding. Her efforts to introduce sustainable waste management practices inspired the younger generation to adopt new habits. Through her initiatives, lasting cross-cultural partnerships flourished, including connecting local schools with Australian Rotary Clubs. These collaborations provided invaluable resources like school supplies, sky hydrant water filters, and improved internet access, directly benefiting thousands of students and residents in the community.
Beyond individual development, her work revolutionised the organisation’s operations. Systems and processes, including finance, administration, and strategic planning, were streamlined, creating a well-coordinated and efficient structure. Her ability to align resources with community needs led to remarkable outcomes: over 30 kindergartens gained access to clean water, and dental clinics dramatically expanded their reach with visiting professionals. Michele’s dedication exemplifies the transformative potential of cross-cultural partnerships in building sustainable, self-reliant communities.
This placement was a true family affair. At various stages, Michele was joined by her two daughters (Gabrielle and Anjelica) both of whom completed their own assignments with the same partner organisation. Their shared dedication and teamwork enriched the community further, offering unique perspectives and skills while demonstrating the powerful impact of intergenerational volunteerism. Together, they strengthened the organisation’s foundation and left an indelible mark on the lives of those they worked alongside.
As her in-country placement concludes, Michele’s absence will undoubtedly be deeply felt by both her colleagues and the community. However, this is far from goodbye. She continues to maintain a strong connection through a current remote assignment, exemplifying the enduring bonds forged through Palms Australia’s global volunteer program. Like many volunteers before her, she will remain a valued part of the partner organisation’s journey, supporting its ongoing growth and development. Palms Australia extends its heartfelt gratitude for her dedication, which not only enriched the lives of countless individuals but also strengthened the foundation for future volunteers to build upon. Her contribution ensures the program’s sustainability and inspires others to join in this vital work.
