The Project

Don Bosco College and Vocational Technical Centre in Salelologa is a Catholic, co-educational high school which offers a unique blend of academic and vocational education on the picturesque island of Savai’i, Samoa. Archbishop Mataeliga envisioned a school where students can “stay in their homes while attending school,” ensuring they remain connected to their community.

At Don Bosco, students in Junior Secondary explore both academic subjects and trade skills. By Year 11, they choose to either continue with their academic studies or develop their talents in a trade. To support this vision, we are seeking qualified and passionate vocational education teachers.

The Location

Don Bosco College is nestled in the coastal village of Salelologa, the largest town on Savai’i island. With a ferry terminal, an airstrip with flights to Faleolo International Airport, a fresh produce market, and a bakery, Salelologa offers a unique blend of rural charm and essential amenities.

The region is vulnerable to cyclones and participants are advised to listen and respond to recommendations from authorities issuing weather warnings. The teacher will need to be sensitive to local customs of dress at work and in public spaces. The political situation in Samoa is stable but limited employment opportunities lead to high unemployment. Access to education, health services, and welfare is limited. Don Bosco is an established training institution and offers ample resources to complete this assignment. The teacher will have access to computer labs and course appropriate textbooks.

The Challenge

In Samoa, formal training in trades is limited, with many tradespeople being self-taught. This results in varied skills and knowledge regarding safe, effective, and sustainable practices. Additionally, opportunities for vocational education teacher training are scarce. Your expertise can make a significant impact in addressing these gaps.

About You

We are looking for volunteers who have:

  • Relevant qualifications and experience in vocational education training
  • Experience in mentoring teachers, youth, and young adults
  • A commitment to teamwork, coaching, and mentoring others
  • Awareness and sensitivity to cross-cultural settings
  • Patience, tolerance, and flexibility
  • The ability to cope with cultural isolation and different living standards
  • A readiness to work with limited resources in a challenging environment

How You Will Help

Your role will involve ongoing mentoring and support for current teachers over a one to two-year timeframe, enhancing the quality of education and learning outcomes. By teaching students and developing resources for the program, you will leave a lasting impact on the school.

Living Allowance

The monthly living allowance is designed to support a modest local lifestyle, covering food, daily commute, communication, and other local costs. It is not intended to cover financial commitments at home or entertainment expenses. For more details, refer to our FAQ.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided by the school on the school grounds.

    • available to attend an orientation course in Sydney. Palms Australia will not fund international flights and cannot sponsor visas to attend this course.
    • a citizen of Australia or New Zealand or an Australian or New Zealand permanent resident residing in Australia. (Australian or New Zealand citizens residing overseas may be considered on a case-by-case basis).
    • willing to complete a Police Check and a Working With Children Check before commencement of an assignment.
