Don Bosco College and Vocational Technical Centre is a provider of education and training in Savai’i, Samoa. The Centre provides a comprehensive program of academic and trade subjects to give students the best possible opportunities for employment.
Don Bosco College requires an English teacher to enhance the teaching skills of existing staff members.
Don Bosco is located in Savai’i, the largest island of Samoa. The Pacific island nation is home to stunning natural surrounds and a proud culture. From diving with sea turtles to throwing coconuts in blowholes (that we 100% do not recommend!), there are plenty of ways to get back to nature during an assignment in Samoa. The region is vulnerable to cyclones and participants are advised to listen and respond to recommendations from authorities issuing weather warnings. The teacher will need to be sensitive to local customs of dress at work and in public spaces.
The political situation in Samoa is stable but limited employment opportunities lead to high unemployment. Access to education, health services, and welfare is limited. Don Bosco is an established training institution and offers ample resources to complete this assignment. The teacher will have access to computer labs and course appropriate text books.
Note: For most assignments, accommodation is provided by the partner organisation. This accommodation has been assessed and approved by Palms Australia as being secure and has adequate utilities.
During the Samoan Annual Teachers Conference in January 2017, one of the Principals highlighted that “…one of the biggest struggles we have is the lack of teachers”. The Samoan government has prioritized education and teacher training in its national strategic direction with the aim to improve access and quality of education.
The provision and training of good teachers, especially in English, mathematics, science, agricultural science, arts and vocational subjects, remains a vital issue to meet the approved teacher/student ratios of 1:30 (primary level) and 1:20 (secondary level).
Don Bosco has requested a suitably qualified and experienced English teacher. The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Qualifications and experience in teaching English
- Experience in mentoring teachers (desirable)
- Adaptability and flexibility
- Cultural sensitivity and openness to working within a different cultural context
- Willingness to work in a community abroad for a minimum of 12 months, with limited resources and facilities.
For this role, English language is required. Willingness to learn Samoan will be an advantage.
How You Will Help
You will work with the local staff of Don Bosco to provide professional skill development that will:
- Encourage teachers to value their role as educators
- Improve classroom management and organisation
- Deliver positive educational outcomes for students
It is expected that at the conclusion of your assignment, this role will be able to be conducted by a local teacher you have supported.
