The Project
Saint Paul Institute (https://spi.edu.kh/) (SPI) is the only Catholic higher education institution in Cambodia, founded in 2009 by Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, Apostolic Vicar of Phnom Penh with the support of Singaporean, Ms. Peggy Goh. It provides over 95% of its students with scholarships for high quality education in a boarding situation. The vast majority of SPI students practice Buddhism (the main religion in Cambodia).
SPI envisions a just and democratic Cambodian society where all students receive an education based on moral values, empowering them to play an active role in the development of the nation. Although SPI is officially recognised by the government as a private higher educational institution, it functions as a non-profit organisation. The main goal is to promote academic improvement, to offer educational opportunities without the intention of making a profit, and to help students from poor communities around Cambodia.
SPI provides the following:
- Associate Degree Program: For those who did not pass the national exam for high school graduation, SPI provides an Associate Degree program. This two-year program’s goal is to give students the fundamental knowledge and abilities they need to support their academic and professional development.
- Bachelor’s Degree Program: SPI offers an extensive bachelor’s degree program to students who have completed the national high school exam. To prepare graduates for success in the workplace, this program offers in-depth knowledge and specific skills in a variety of subjects, including information technology, agronomy, English literature, social work, and tourism management.
- Extra English Courses: SPI provides a part-time Extra English courses in addition to its main degree programs. This program is suitable for individuals who want to improve their English language abilities because it offers flexible learning options to do this after school on weekdays.
The Location
SPI is in Ang Korki Village, Tapam Commune, Tramkok District, Takeo Province, Cambodia, which is approximately an hour from the centre of Phnom Penh. It thus offers the opportunity for a more serene experience, while still allowing participants to travel around Cambodia on weekends and in term breaks. Cambodia is a peaceful and hospitable country for travellers.
The Challenge
The teaching staff at SPI are committed to providing students comprehensive education and practice in English, both inside the academic program and through extra evening programs. They also assist with the club activities for English majors, such as debates and public speaking. However, managing these events successfully is challenging, and having a qualified English lecturer involved would significantly improve SPI students’ confidence and English language capability development.
By joining the faculty, you will help bridge these gaps, providing valuable expertise and mentorship to SPI students and teachers.
About You
We are seeking an enthusiastic and qualified English Lecturer
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Relevant qualifications (a Bachelor of Education or related field, or Master of Education or related field) and demonstrated relevant experience
- Experience in mentoring teachers and young adults
- A commitment to teamwork, coaching, and mentoring others
- Awareness and sensitivity to cross-cultural settings
- Patience, tolerance, and flexibility
- The ability to cope with cultural isolation and different living standards
- A readiness to work with limited resources in a challenging environment
How You Will Help
Your role will involve working on curriculum development, assisting with teaching activities, and supporting students’ academic progress through various programs.
By teaching students and developing resources for Saint Paul Institute, you will leave a lasting impact on the organisation.
Living Allowance
The monthly living allowance is designed to support a modest local lifestyle, covering food, daily commute, communication, and other local costs. It is not intended to cover financial commitments at home or entertainment expenses. For more details, refer to our FAQ.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided by the Institute on the campus. A single room and meals (Monday to Friday) will be provided.
