“We are able to detect more TB using the GeneXpert machine” – New Tech in Timor Leste

By Pedro Freitas with Ricardina da Costa Fernandes

Ricardina da Costa Fernandes is a laboratory technician with Klibur Domin in Viqueque, Timor Leste. With the arrival of a GeneXpert diagnostic machine, it is hoped the clinic will be better able to diagnose and treat those with tuberculosis. Pedro Freitas asked Ricardina how this new technology will make a difference.

“I’m happy that Klibur Domin and Australia Aid have provided support for the GeneXpert machine to Viqueque and that I have had the opportunity to receive this training on the operation of the GeneXpert.”

“This has been the first time that I have had an opportunity to operate a GeneXpert Machine. This is a really important opportunity for Viqueque because we have been having trouble detecting TB in patients using microscope technology. We are able to detect more TB using the GeneXpert machine, but up until now that has only been accisible at the National Hospital in Dili and that is too far to travel.”

“I hope that in the future we will have even more staff at the Viqueque TB laboratory and even more people operating GeneXpert machines in Timor-Leste.”
